April Poetry Reading - National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month.

Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

Join the Academy of American Poets in celebrating Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 26. The idea is simple: select a poem you love, carry it with you and share it with co-workers, family, and friends. Each year on this day, poems from pockets throughout the United States will be unfolded at events in parks, libraries, schools, workplaces, and bookstores. For more information, celebration ideas, and sample poems, visit www.poets.org/pocket.

Locally, the Ancient City Poets will gather in St. Augustine, Florida at The Gallery Café from (located at 1974 US1 South in the Staples Plaza) from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 29. In observation of National Poetry Month all poets are encouraged to bring poems that celebrate the ups and downs of writing. You can also share your Poem in your Pocket Day experiences. A sign-up sheet will be available 15 minutes before start time for all those who would like to read original poems or something from a favorite poet.
